Research
In our Section Pulmonology, we conduct both clinical trials as well as basic research on diseases of the lung. One focal point is pulmonary arterial hypertension. Through our tight networking, we work collaborate with various other departments in order to continue improving patient care in the future. Our clinical trials center closely accompanies patients who participate in clinical studies.

Clinical Trials Center
Clinical Trials CenterThe Section Pulmonology conducts clinical studies on the entire range of respiratory diseases. The Clinical Trials Center serves as a central interface between internal and external partners and patients. In particular, the clinical trials center ensures that the international, ethical, and scientific standards are met and as well as the compliance with current legislation and guidelines (AMG, I-GCP, GCP guidelines) in all study-relevant areas (planning, implementation, documentation, and reporting). Our primary objective is to guarantee the rights, safety, and well-being of the study participants. The close networking with national and international clinical trials centers and the regular participation in national and international conferences ensures an optimum implementation of clinical trials. In order to provide support for the growing number of studies and study participants, the clinical trials center team has been reinforced by other employees in the last few years.
In the offices of the study center, fully equipped workstations with appropriate EDP structure are available for the monitoring of clinical studies. In addition, the Clinical Trials Center has storage rooms with temperature-controlled medication refrigerators and freezers, as well as its own laboratory workplace for processing specific study samples. For outpatient and inpatient care in our pulmonology department, all supply structures and diagnostic methods of the University Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf are available. The legally-compliant storage of the study documents is guaranteed even after the completion of the study by the central warehouse of the University Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf.
The constant effort to improve the therapeutic options in the treatment of respiratory diseases is the prerequisite for excellent patient care. Clinical trials are a fundamental component of this effort and are an integral part of our medical and nursing care activities. For any study requests, please contact us directly. In the TrialFinder, there is a comprehensive overview of the open study protocols available in Hamburg.
A particular focus of clinical research in our department is on pulmonary hypertension. We are involved in all important trials with the aim of obtaining approval of new treatments and of studies for the continuous evaluation of the effectiveness of authorized therapies. Within the framework of the Center for Pulmonary Arterial Hypertension [CG1] of the University Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf, there is a special interdisciplinary exchange with other hospitals and departments. Leading staff members of our department are also active in the respective working groups for pulmonary hypertension of the German Societies for Cardiology (DGK) and Pulmonology (DGP), and regularly publish medical articles [CG2] in the area of pulmonary hypertension.

Basic Research
Basic ResearchWorking Group Pulmonary Hypertension
Since 2009, the working group Pulmonary Hypertension of the Section Pulmonology has been preoccupied with various aspects of the molecular disease mechanisms of pulmonary hypertension, especially the rare forms of pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) and chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension (CTEPH). The overall objectives are to improve risk assessment and to development new therapeutic measures for affected patients. There is a close cooperation with the Institute for Clinical Pharmacology and Toxicology [CG1] of the University Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf with joint implementation of scientific projects, supervision of doctoral projects, and publications [CG2] in the area of pulmonary hypertension. The scientific emphasis of the Working Group Pulmonary Hypertension includes the following topics:
- Dysregulation of endothelial L–Arginine/Nitric Oxide (NO) metabolism
- Molecular mechanisms defining impact of physical activity
- Pulmonary vascular inflammation as a regulatory mechanism of endothelial function
- New biomarkers in translational testing
