Our staff colleagues at the reception desk in the main building (O10) will be glad to direct you to the medical department in question so that you will get a good orientation in our medical center straightaway. At the reception desk, you also will be answered first practical questions on your stay in our medical center.

Outpatients
If you come to the UKE for outpatient treatment, please contact our staff at the reception counter at the respective medical center, first. Our staff colleagues at the blue reception counters will be glad to help you find the respective department being responsible for your treatment. Please bring along the following documents, and hand them over to our staff colleagues on site:
- health insurance card
- referral
- physician's reports and X-rays, if any

Inpatients
Inpatients
If you have to be registered as inpatient at the UKE, there will be some formalities which will have to be completed beforehand. The most important at a glance:
Central patient registration: Please present your referral, health insurance card, identification card and physician’s reports at the central patient registration. Once your personal data and status of insurance will have been recorded electronically, you will receive your personal hospital wristband.
Contract governing medical treatment: Every patient concludes a contract governing medical treatment with us. If you wish, we can agree on additional optional services. Those will give you e. g. the opportunity to be accommodated in a single bed room or two bed room and to benefit from exclusive services of amenities. Or you can stipulate that you will be treated by the head physician directly. Our central case management staff at the central patient registration will be glad to assist you, if you have questions regarding the contracts and possible costs!
Important preliminary examinations: To make sure you will not lose any time, we located the central blood withdrawal, ECG office (electrocardiogram) and pre-medication health care center for anesthesia information in immediate vicinity of the patient registration. As soon as we will have completed all preliminary examinations necessary, we will be glad to receive you in your ward in charge!
We have compiled some tips (in German) for you so that you will be able to prepare your stay in our medical center at the best.

To recover quickly, it is important that you feel well informed and do trust the team treating you. Therefore, you should always get all questions answered which are on your mind. Some frequently asked questions of patients during their stay in the ward as follows:
- What can I do myself to recover?
- Will my disease be treated here in the UKE (Universitätsklinikum Hamburg-Eppendorf)?
- For how long will I be likely to stay in hospital?
- What will be my treatment like afterwards?
Duty to inform the patient!
Our physicians are obligated to thoroughly inform you about the meaning, consequences and risks of your treatment. Due to daily routine, physicians tend to use medical terms. Please point out to them, if something is incomprehensible. You will have the right to seek a second opinion if you are uncertain.

Hospital bracelet
Your personal bracelet provides safety!
On registration as inpatient at the UKE (University Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf), you will receive your personal hospital bracelet with all important information on your person, such as name, date of birth and individual patient number. The personal hospital bracelet is your personal ID in the UKE and is for your own safety. Using this bracelet our staff members can e. g. check whether the right patient will be treated in the right way at the right time. Therefore, please do not remove your personal hospital bracelet during the entire stay in the UKE to make sure that your treatment process will run as smoothly as possible. If you are a parent or caregiver of a patient, please make sure that the patient always wears the personal hospital bracelet. If you have lost your personal hospital bracelet, please contact the attending nursing staff. You will then receive a new personal hospital bracelet.

Electronic patient record
Security for your data
Within the UKE (University Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf), every patient has an electronic patient record. Physicians and nursing staff document the entire course of your treatment in your personal electronic patient record. Findings, X-rays, electrocardiograms – all information is gathered in a file and can be called up by your attending physicians everywhere at all times. Another big advantage: the information on the course of your treatment is always up to date. It goes without saying that all your data you entrust to us will be secure. For the second time already, the German Federal Office for Information Security (BSI) awarded the highest seal of approval for electronic patient record safety to the UKE.

Self-determination by means of a patient decree
You will protect your right to self-determination by means of a patient decree in the event that you will be no longer able to express yourself. This may be the case when suffering from a serious mental or psychological disease or at the end of life. By use of a patient decree, you will specify your will how physicians, relatives, an authorized person or a legally appointed caregiver have to act appropriately in case of emergency.
Patient decrees have been governed by law since September 2009 (§ 1901a BGB = German Civil Code). According to this article, a patient decree can only be formulated in written by a person who has attained his/her majority and who is capable of making a decision. The person must indicate in his/her decree, whether he/she gives his/her consent to a particular medical measure which is not imminent at the time of the establishment of the document, or not. Specifically, that means: You determine in advance what medical procedure you will agree to or which one you will reject for the event that you will not be able to decide for yourself anymore. As a matter of principle, the stipulation made in your patient decree is binding for everyone.

Make research advance!
We want to perfectly understand diseases in order to treat them in a targeted manner. For this purpose, it is sometimes necessary to take tissue samples for example from the bone, blood or urine. Your attending physician will inform you, if it is reasonable in your case to make a diagnosis for your disease and for the treatment of it. Read more about what exactly will happen to your tissue samples in the UKE (University Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf) and how you yourself can contribute to continually improve the quality of patient care.
- Why and where will my tissue samples be preserved?
Staff of the respective institute examines tissues which were taken for diagnosis and treatment purposes and will, afterwards, send the result back to the attending physician. The institutes keep smaller parts of the samples to be able to examine them again later on. This occurs for instance, if there is new medical information making further analysis necessary. It can help with the treatment of cancerous diseases more than 30 years after removal and examination of the tissue samples - Can I veto the preservation?
If you do not want your tissue samples to be preserved after diagnosis and treatment, you can veto this toward the Chief of Hospital Staff of the hospital you are being treated in. Your samples will be destroyed immediately so that later analysis will be no longer possible. - What rights do I have?
You can claim your right to information at any time during the period of time of preservation of the samples and the associated health data. You can have the data corrected, blocked for access or deleted. In this case, please contact the Chief of Hospital Staff of the hospital you have been treated in. - How will the rests of my samples be used?
We are a University Medical Center and have therefore received the order to perform research on methods of treatment and healing. The findings shall help to recognize diseases yet earlier and better and to treat them in a more targeted manner. For this purpose, our scientists need the rests of tissue samples which are no longer required for diagnostic investigation and therapy. The hospitals and institutes of the UKE include the rests of the samples into the research database. Your personal data, such as name and address will be deleted and replaced by an alias. - Do I have to agree?
Yes, we will need your assent so that we can use your samples for research purposes. You can express your assent by means of a separate declaration of consent. - May my samples be passed on?
We will completely delete your personal data on this before passing your samples on to other University Medical Centers for research purposes.
Clinical trials
We work in interdisciplinary projects to preserve your health, constantly optimize therapies and treatments and to develop new ones and better diagnostics. We research the biological fundamentals of diseases, develop new diagnostic and therapeutic methods and explore them in clinical trials.
We have to prove to a high extent that your safety will be guaranteed, before we verify the aversion response and efficacy of a medical treatment. On the websites of the respective hospitals you will find further information on which hospital is currently performing which clinical trial and whether you can participate. Just search for the term "Research". You will also find the trials of the UKE institutes, if you use the same search word.
