Our Treatment Core Areas
The I. Department of Medicine serves patients with liver diseases and diseases of the digestive organs . Another focus is the evaluation and treatment of infectiological and tropical medical diseases.
Liver diseases

Autoimmune hepatitis
The Autoimmune hepatitis is a chronic autoimmune inflammation of the liver tissue , which if left untreated can lead to progressive liver damage through to cirrhosis . The disease can be usually treated very well with immunosuppressive drugs . These drugs " slow down " the body's immune system , which is needed to ward off infection . Should the standard therapy is not sufficiently effective or not tolerated , there are a number of other medicines ( so-called " off-label" therapies ) for the treatment for individual advice.

Primary sclerosing cholangitis ( PSC )
Primary sclerosing cholangitis (PSC ) is characterized by chronic , inflammatory scarring of the bile ducts inside and outside the liver . The sclerosis results in typical stenoses of the bile ducts , as well as over the years in many patients for liver cirrhosis . The PSC is associated with an increased risk of malignant neoplasms in the liver . The disease is often associated with ursodeoxycholic acid ( UDCA ) , a bile acid acting protectively treated ( so-called " off-label" treatment ) . In severe inflammation of the liver , an additional immunosuppressive therapy may be required .

Primary biliary cirrhosis ( PBC)
Primary biliary cirrhosis (PBC ) is characterized by autoimmune inflammation of the small and medium-sized bile ducts in the liver . The disease usually speaks very well on a permanent treatment with ursodeoxycholic acid ( UDCA ) , a bile acid protectively acting on . In severe inflammation of the liver , lack of response to treatment with UDCA or existence of an overlap with the form of autoimmune hepatitis , an additional immunosuppressive therapy may be required . In advanced disease , a liver transplant resulting in excellent long-term results .
