Research at the Institute for Immunology
The working group on Virus Immunology , headed by Prof. Dr. Marcus Altfeld, investigates protective innate and adaptive immune responses against viruses that infect humans. One research focus is the identification of critical mechanisms underlying sex-specific differences in antiviral immunity.
The working group on Clinical Immunology , headed by Prof. Dr. Friedrich Haag, is focused on the molecular characterization of lymphocyte membrane proteins, in particular receptors and enzymes involved in signaling by extracellular nucleotides.
Because of the close connection to the Clinical Immunodiagnostics Laboratory the group is also interested in evaluating and improving immunodiagnostic methods suitable for routine use.
The working group on Moleculare Immunology , headed by Prof. Dr. Friedrich Koch-Nolte, is focused on the molecular characterization of lymphocyte membrane proteins, in particular receptors and enzymes involved in signaling by extracellular nucleotides. The laboratory of Prof. Nolte generates monoclonal and single domain antibodies as new research and therapeutic tools.
The working group on Infection Immunology , headed by Prof. Dr. Hans-Willi Mittrücker, is focused on the regulation of immune responses against pathogens and on the function of T cells in autoimmune kidney diseases.
The working group on Medical Immunology , headed by Prof. Dr. Felix Stahl, is focused on the cellular immune responses against viruses (especially cytomegaloviruses (CMV)) in the context of clinically relevant questions.
The working group on Immune Regulation , headed by Prof. Dr. Eva Tolosa, is focused on the regulation of autoimmune diseases.
