About the I. Department of Medicine

laparoscopy
Our medical practitioners perform a mini - laparoscopy.

The medical and nursing team of the I. Department of Medicine is particularly experienced in the treatment of gastrointestinal, liver and pancreatic diseases, infectious and tropical medical diseases as well as in the therapy of tumours. Close cooperation with the Department of Hepatobiliary Surgery and Transplantation enables us to provide patients with the highest level of care before and after liver transplantation. In the treatment centre for highly infectious diseases (BZHI), we care for patients with rare infectious diseases. In order to maintain this high level, we constantly evaluate and update our internal processes as part of our quality management. We investigate the development and course of important diseases of the liver and the digestive tract in order to better understand them and thus find even more successful therapies. Focal areas include viral hepatitis, autoimmune liver diseases and tumours of the liver and pancreas. Together with the Bernhard Nocht Institute for Tropical Medicine, we investigate infectious diseases such as malaria and viral diseases. Our clinic operates the largest hepatitis outpatient clinic and the only special outpatient clinic for autoimmune diseases of the liver in Germany. Thanks to the BZHI, we are one of five treatment centres nationwide that can provide specialised care for patients with life-threatening, highly contagious infections. We have particular expertise in the mini-laparoscopy technology we have developed and in the TIPS system. In addition, we are the first centre in northern Germany to offer non-invasive liver elasticity measurement (fibroscan).
