Program highlights
NEW: Joint Friday program for wet lab researchers and psychosocial researchers
In order to facilitate more interaction and the opportunity to make contacts with regard to joint research projects, we would like to offer wet lab researchers and psychosocial researchers a joint program on Friday, which includes the following elements in addition to common break times:
- Welcome by the UCCH Board of Directors and update on new developments at the Cancer Center
- Overview lecture on a key topic from health care research with link to experimental research
- Overview lecture on a key topic from experimental research with link to health care research
- Lecture on patient participation in research projects
- Presentation of graphical abstracts
- Joint poster session
(Afterwards: separate parallel program parts for wet lab and psychosocial researchers; the program for psychosocial researchers will end on Friday afternoon)
Hubertus Wald Junior Investigator Award for Oncology Research, Junior Investigator Award for Psychsocial Cancer Research & Poster Award
Presentations from all junior researchers will be evaluated by the Retreat audience to nominate the most outstanding projects presented and to select the 2024 recipients of the Hubertus Wald Junior Investigator Award for Oncology Research, the Junior Investigator Award for Psychosocial Cancer Research as well as the UCCH Poster Award.
NEW: Science Communication Award (for the most outstanding graphical abstract)
This year, the UCCH is awarding a prize for the most outstanding graphical abstract for the first time. The graphical abstracts will be presented in a special session in the form of flash talks.
UCCH Research Fellowship
Junior physician researchers who aim to pursue an experimental research project in the lab full-time for one year may apply for the UCCH Research Fellowship. The applicants present their project proposals in a special session at the Retreat.

Important information / FAQs
Eligibility to attend:
All senior and junior researchers from UCCH/UKE who are involved in cancer-relevant research are welcome to attend the UCCH Research Retreat.
Cost of attendance:
For all admitted researchers the UCCH covers all costs for accommodation, meals and bus transfers by a chartered bus from UKE to Reinstorf and return (bus transfers can only be offered to those attending on Friday and Saturday).
Do I have to give a talk or present a poster?
Attendees are encouraged to present their research project in an oral presentation or in a poster session, but there is no obligation. If you wish to give a talk or present a poster, please submit your abstract as described further above. The decision whether your project will be presented in a regular session or in a poster session will be made by the UCCH Core Team.
NEW: An additional option to present a research topic is to design a graphical abstract. If you would like to choose this option please refer to the chapter "Submission of abstracts..." further above.
When do I get definitive notice about whether I can attend?
As the total number of participants is limited, we cannot guarantee that all researchers who register will definitively be admitted to attend. You will receive definitive notice via e-mail by June 17, 2024 at the latest.
Important for bus users:
If you wish to the take the chartered bus (for participants attending the event on Friday AND Saturday), please register for this service very soon, as we can only provide seats for a limited number of passengers. Please also ensure to be on time on the day of departure. We meet at 7:30 a.m. at UKE Hauptzufahrt, Martinistr. 52. Departure is at 7:45 a.m.! For the return trip to UKE, departure time is currently anticipated at around 2:30 p.m.
Fee for no-shows:
Please note that the UCCH has to charge a 114 Euro personal contribution (Selbstbeteiligung) in case of non-usage of your hotel room. We will bindingly book a hotel room for you after our confirmation of your participation in the event (in case of attendance on Friday and Saturday). Cancellation of the hotel room is possible by e-mail until 2 weeks prior to the event (exemption: cases of sudden illness).
